Materials of construction

Selecting the Right Metal for Project Success

Sorting through the diverse properties of various metals is essential for hitting the mark with your project objectives, whether it’s designing a wet scrubber system for processing corrosive chemicals or the safety railings for routine maintenance. Our seasoned engineers and fabrication specialists are here to walk you through this journey, ensuring you find the exact material of construction for your needs. Though not comprehensive, here’s an overview of the most common materials we work with in our fabrication shop.

Metal Options

Carbon Steel

Carbon steel is a cost-effective and robust option, favored for its strength. However, it’s prone to rust and corrosion, especially in high-moisture environments. For non-pressure vessel equipment, ASTM A36 steel is suitable, while pressure vessel equipment demands sturdier options like ASTM A516 Gr 70.

AR Steel

Boasting exceptional strength and hardness, AR (Abrasion Resistant) steel is a high-carbon alloy steel, ideal for applications requiring superior wear resistance. However, it’s crucial to note that AR steel isn’t suitable as the sole material for pressure vessels.

304 Stainless Steel (304SS)

Recognized for its corrosion resistance, heat resistance, and ease of processing, 304SS stands as a reliable choice for various applications.

316 Stainless Steel (316SS)

With outstanding corrosion resistance and high-temperature resilience, 316SS finds its niche in marine and chemical plant environments. When exposed to corrosive pollutants, it often outperforms 304SS.

Duplex

Duplex 2205 is a high-strength, corrosion-resistant stainless steel. With more than twice the yield strength of 316SS, it’s strength results in a smaller minimum required thickness. Its exceptional resistance to corrosion, pitting, and stress corrosion cracking makes it an excellent choice for demanding applications.

Aluminum

Aluminum offers lightweight, fireproof properties and excellent electrical conductivity. While it doesn’t rust and effectively reflects light and heat, its lower strength and heat resistance may limit its suitability for high-temperature or high-pressure environments.

Hastelloy

Hastelloy, a family of nickel-based superalloys, is celebrated for its unparalleled resistance to corrosion and high-temperature resistance. With a range of grades tailored for specific applications, our team specializes in guiding you through the selection process, ensuring you find the perfect Hastelloy alloy to meet your unique requirements.

Inconel

Inconel represents a class of materials comprising numerous nickel-chromium-based superalloys. These alloys find extensive application in extreme environments characterized by high temperatures, pressures, or mechanical stresses. Notably, Inconel holds a slight advantage in oxidizing conditions, making it a preferred choice for such applications.

Just as with Hastelloy, our team is equipped to guide you in selecting the optimal grade of Inconel alloy to suit your specific requirements.
