The Functional and Safety Benefits of Scroll Outlets
A scroll outlet is a strategic accessory designed to optimize the functionality and safety of a cyclone system. Installed at the top of the cyclone and mounted directly onto the outlet pipe, also known as the vortex finder, scroll outlets are not intended to directly increase cyclone collection efficiency. However, they offer several critical benefits for integrating a system into industrial processes.
Enhanced Gas Flow Dynamics
When process gas flows through a cyclone, it generates a vortex, spiraling either clockwise or counterclockwise. This rotation continues up through the outlet pipe.
A scroll outlet serves as a mechanism for swiftly redirecting this upward axial flow of process gas into a horizontal trajectory. The benefit of this rapid change in process gas direction is eliminating the need for a large radius elbow that is 2-3x the height of the scroll outlet. Eliminating this requirement optimizes operational space and streamlines installation processes.
Facilitation of Safety Measures
In addition to its primary function, scroll outlets provides a strategic location for installing an explosion vent on a cyclone. Flat space atop a cyclone is often limited, presenting challenges for integrating safety features. However, the scroll outlet offers a distinct advantage by providing a designated area where an explosion vent can be securely placed without compromising cyclone performance. The model pictured here demonstrates where a flange for an explosion vent would be incorporated into the design.
